Progesterone produces most of the early pregnancy symptoms and it increases immediately following ovulation (pregnant or not), and it peaks by about day 7 in non-conception cycles. It's rise is responsible for many non-pregnant women feeling a variety of symptoms that are also common in pregnancy. Also there is a protein called EPF (early pregnancy factor). This is produced immediately following a conception and is a better earlier predictor of pregnancy (unfortunately there are no home tests for this as it is expensive). EPF ramps down the immune system, in order to prevent gestational drive by women's immune systems misperceiving the conceptus as a foreign body and attacking it. At this time, it is still unknown if EPF might cause other pregnancy symptoms. But one thing it likely does is make women in very early pregnancy quite susceptible to getting sick, since the immune system is getting suppressed.
