Question

Why can't I get a blood test?

I'm 4 days late now and still getting mixed hpt results. I decided I would go get a blood test since I was off today and had some free time. I tried calling my gyn but could never get through. I called my primary doctor and got an appointment there. I asked on the phone and several times in the room for a blood test. When I got called into the lab, the gave me a urine test. I told the doctor that I had used the bathroom about an hour ago and had been drinking water. So of course the test was negative. I can't trust that test to be accurate. The doctor said they would only do a blood test if the urine test was positive. I was told to call them in 2 weeks if I didn't start.
Is this normal? I'm ttc my first child and have never dealt with office testing before. Shouldn't they have given me the test I asked for?

I don't know why your doctor's office operates this way but I have heard such stories before. If I am late my doctor will do a urine test and also a blood test all at the same time to make sure. GL!

I used to have kaiser, and with kaiser they add 50 HCG blood tests to your que when you are TTC, so u can go to the lab and do blood tests as you please. BUT - now that I have bc/bs I'm already prepared to wait until I get a positive urine test to be given a blood test, since that's a more typical protocol.

So, it's normal for them to have to have a positive urine test first? That's silly. Thanks. That makes me feel a little better. I wish they would have told me that before hand. I would have waited to get through to my gyn. I pretty much just took a very expensive hpt and wasted a lot of time.

We have BC/BS also but I still get both tests done simultaneously. I think it depends on the practice you are using not necessarily the insurance company.

with my first pregnancy (a live birth), my OB didn't do a blood test until I had a positive urine test in the office. With my 2nd pregnancy (an 8 week loss), I didn't even know I was pregnant until I went to the ER for abdominal pain. I don't have an appendix or gallbladder and was having horrible ab. pain - I was miscarrying one baby, and pregnant with another (that I ended up losing as well.).

They did a blood test then, but I'm sure it was only because they had probably already done a urine one with my pee sample.
