Question

Ttc at 40, Dr said 5mg Folic Acid essential? Anyone know more?

Hi, I'm 40 next month and on cycle 7 of ttc number 4. I saw a Dr yesterday for something unrelated and he noted I was ttc. He immediately wrote a prescription for 5mg of Folic Acid which is a much higher dose than in prenatal vitamins. I'm going back to see him next week but he said it was the wisest thing to do for women my age ttc. Does anyone know more about this?

Yes my doctor put me on this a few years ago when I got pregnant but kept having miscarriages, it helps the body produce what ever the baby needs to help grow if I remember correctly.i am now ttc and I started taking on my own but much higher dose when I told my doc I was ttc she asked about the folic acid I said I already started she was like great.it just gives a more support.

According to my doctor such high doses are not necessary, 800 mcg is recommended. Obviously you can take more if you think it's necessary, it can't hurt. By the way, miscarriages caused by chromosomal abnormalities CANNOT be prevented even if megadoses of folic acid and vitamins are taken. GL!

Thanks for your answers ladies. 5mg does seem awfully high. Can too much Folic acid do harm? I told him I was taking a prenatal (elevit) but he said the Folic acid in it was no where near enough. I might spend some time consulting dr google! :)

My OB had me on 5mg of FA (prenatal included), he said its a safe amount. He dropped it back to 3mg total after first tri. I put myself back on 5 again while ttc this one and will just repeat last pregnancy's doses until told otherwise.

I was put on 5 mg when I tested positive for MTHFR (which means my body doesn't process folic acid correctly)...and I've had 3 miscarriages. It does seem a bit extreme if you haven't had any problems, but it shouldn't do any harm to you or baby. I had another doctor switch me to Metanx a year ago...which is folic acid already processed so my body can absorb it...it is expensive!

Folic acid does not build up in the body like some fat-soluble vitamins. So anything that you body doesn't use is expelled in the urine. So it can't hurt!
