Question

Mental Health and Pregnancy

I am dealing with PTSD while trying for a baby and want to know if anyone else is dealing with a diagnosed mental health illness while pregnant or trying to conceive.

Are/Were you taking medication?
Are/Were you in therapy?
How are you coping with your illness while trying to conceive?
Did your symptoms improve or get worse when you got pregnant?

I have a moderate to severe panic disorder. I take medication and seek cognitive behaviora therapy. When I got pregnant I was advised to reduce my dosage but stayed on my medication throughout pregnancy. When my baby was 7 months old I very gradually increased my dosage back to normal even while breastfeeding because I was having constant panic attacks and severe agoraphobia. Like I couldn't walk out my front door. It was bad. I didn't leave my house for 3 months. My baby is apparently unaffected by my medication. He is healthy and meeting all his milestones right on time. Talk to your psychiatrist and your OB. It's not without struggle, but it can be done!!

I had been on Wellbutrin XL for SAD for the last few months. I stopped my medications with a positive pregnancy test on Dec 1. I have been feeling a little bit shaky but am getting acupuncture treatments and will look into light therapy also. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.

TTC for 2.5 years with family history of severe depression. It's not easy, but I am still hopeful. I will certainly pray for you. Stay positive, my friend!
