Question

Anyone experienced with Paxil? PLEASE HELP

I am calling my doc to make and appointment to change my meds from paxil to something else. Mostly because paxil increases the risk of heart abnormalities to a fetus in the first trimester. Originally I had planned to stay on it until I got my BFP and then change meds.

However, 8 months later, still no bfp. I have also been taking paxil for about 9 months. It just occurred to me, that the medication may actually be preventing pregnancy.

Since I began my daily 20mg dose of paxil my cycles have been insanely irregular, where as they were like clock work. Cycle lengths have varied over the last few, 38.31.42.38.37.5.47...and currently I am on CD 43, no AF - no BFP.

Does anyone else have this experience?? Could paxil really be delaying ovulation?

Please help. I need to know that am not grasping at straws.

I don't have any experience with paxil other than hearing that it is indeed not good to take whilst prego... imo I think it could make ttc harder. My (totally unprofessional) take on drugs that aren't good during pregnancy, especially one like that that causes development problems that early (first trimester as opposed to the third) would be that it could affect fertility. Like, perhaps cause problems with hormones being at levels where they need to be which would cause a chain reaction in other areas. Less estrogen = bad lining or poor egg maturation ergo a bad quality egg or, low progesterone = slippery lining as opposed to a sticky one. That kinda thing. If you can, I'd ttc without for a few months. If living without it would cause too many problems obviously talk to a doc. The fact that it's already messed with your cycle is a decent indicator of its affect on your fertility. NOT a doctor. Just my own rationalization.

The general consensus is that Paxil is safe for women while TTC as it does not negatively affect ovulation. However, it should not be taken during pregnancy as you already know. I have never been on Paxil but am using Wellbutrin XL for seasonal affective disorder during fall and winter. Wellbutrin has not changed my cycles or fertility. If I became pregnant I would discontinue this drug immediately although it is considered relatively safe during pregnancy. Certain short-term problems in infants and possibly ADHD has been linked to the use of it. I don't know if any of this information is helpful to you but I just wanted to let you know about my experiences with anti depressants and fertility. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.
