Question

Optimism versus Realism

Any woman that has been a member of a two week wait or trying to conceive site knows that there are some catty women out there just waiting to answer your concerns, questions and comments with negative, sarcastic or just down right mean answers. Whether it be their personalities or their own frustrations with ttc coming to light, this behavior is nonproductive and unnecessary. The fact is that most of us come to these sites to connect with others going through like situations, and for some it is their only means of support during what can be a difficult and stressful process.
On the other hand many times we post pictures or results looking for honest answers to serious questions that are met with excessive optimism, building hope in a situation that can only lead to further disappointment. And while we join these communities for support we are also looking real answers.
My question is when on the asking end of a question do women prefer optimism over realism?

Poll:
Give it to me straight (10 votes)
Be honest but compassionate (16 votes)
Realistically I just want hope (1 votes)
Tell me what I want to hear (1 votes)

I usually have a hard time answering questions like "am I pregnant?" Many women on this site want to become pregnant really fast and have very high expectations coming from certain symptoms. I have encountered hostility before just because I try to put some realism into the situation. However, some women do not want to be deterred from the thought that a specific cycle is THE ONE. In those cases It can be difficult to be supportive as the person asking the question only wants to get feedback on a presumed positive outcome. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.

I understand and that is why I ask. I have read countless threads full of unlikely / unrealistic optimism and I wonder, who is that really helping? There is a way to deliver practical advice and still be supportive. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings to you as well.
