To see if the tubes are clear normally a HSG is done. To see if the uterine cavity is normal and to check for fibroids the saline ultrasound is done. I had one done 9 years ago and it was not painful for me. I am scheduled to do another one on Saturday to prepare for an upcoming embryo transfer. I have heard from some that this test was painful....It might differ from person to person. As for me it is an easy and quick procedure and I hope it will be the same experience for you. I had one done last month and I didn't find it bad at all. I took Advil 30 min before as recommended. I have had an IUD in the past and that was uncomfortable. Then you leak pink water for a day and that's it. Hope it helps. I think the anxiety is worse than the test.

I've had 3. The first two were so painful, I nearly crawled off the table (on the plus side, it only takes a few seconds and once they're done, the pain is gone immediately). The third wasn't any worse than a pap smear. Good luck!

(definitely use a panty liner, you will leak some)
