Question

High prolactin levels????

Well, this was the month my doctor was finally taking my concerns seriously and ordered blood tests on CD 3 to begin clomid on CD 5. My prolactin level was 24.66. She was very vague when giving me the results (via email). From what I understand this could be caused my nipple stimulation(she said this could be caused while in the shower) or a cyst on the pituitary gland. What on earth!!!! I am so frustrated with this whole process. I don't understand why this has to be so difficult. I am out for trying clomid this month, which is really disheartening. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Any information on treatment if clomid is not an option. I;m at a point where I could just SCREAM! I'm so tired of crying and being stressed.

I was dealing with high prolactin levels at age 24. I was put on Parlodel/Bromocriptine for a quite while. I also had a CT scan to see if this was caused by a tumor, but it was not. In any event, it took us 13 years to conceive our first child, finally through ZIFT. Not a single one of the numerous REs we consulted was ever able to explain why we could not conceive. I can so fully understand your frustration over this process. After our first was born we over sudden were able to conceive on our own and had 3 more healthy children, 2 of them conceived naturally after the age of 40. While my story is probably not the norm I would like to encourage you to continue with your efforts. It will pay off. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.

Elevated prolactin can easily be treated with medication such as bromocriptine. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism which in turn caused my prolactin level to rise (it was between 18-31 untreated). I started medication and it went down to 0. I would suggest asking your dr. to start you on the medication as that usually is the first step. Because I am hypothyroid with no other symptoms and because I responded well to the medication, my endocrinologist doubts I have a tumor (by the way pituitary tumors that cause elevated prolactin are not cancerous). Your dr. may opt for a MRI just to rule that out though. Prolactin can cause disruptions in ovulation so getting it in check is important. However it's easily treated and you can research natural alternatives too, such as Vitex and other herbs which are helpful to lowering prolactin naturally. One last thing, prolactin can rise due to a variety of things such as nipple stimulation so it might not be a bad idea...

to get another test done to confirm the levels are elevated. My gyn tested my prolactin right after giving me a breast exam which can raise my levels. But I ended up having 3 tests in a row with high levels. But as soon as I started the medication, they went right down. Unfortunately or fortunately, however you look at it, I had normal ovulation and cycles while my prolactin was elevated so I have no idea what it affected. In any case, hopefully your dr will work with you to lower it!

Thanks for all the information. I am going to see a new doctor tomorrow to hopefully get some more information. I am so disappointed that I wasn't able to begin the clomid this month. I hope my new doctor will be able to explain some of this to me in more detail. I feel like, from the information I have read, clomid can be taken in conjunction with the medication for high prolactin.
