Question

Urologist vs RE

Hello all,
My hubby's 2nd SA came back with 7% morphology (1-9%) with everything else being normal. Count and motility are great. They referred us to a RE, but I feel like we should see a urologist first. Anyone else with similar experience? I had lab tests and a hsg, which are all normal.

A urologist might be a good option if the problem were more serious (like something that required surgery), but they are probably thinking that an RE would want to do IUI, which would likely be a great option for you guys :)

I was just hoping to conceive naturally. Our insurance won't pay anything towards fertility treatments, and I can't imagine what this will cost us. I am starting to wonder if maybe we weren't meant to have children. We are still in the initial shock phase. Thanks for your input :)

If his other numbers are good you still have a decent shot, you don't HAVE to try IUI or anything else! I was hoping to be able to conceive "naturally" too but that was definitely not in the cards. The way I see it, a baby is a baby however it comes about! :)

New standards for morphology indicate anything over 4% is normal...your doctor must be going by the older standards. If everything else is also normal I don't think there is really a problem. If you do go to a urologist make sure it is one that specializes in infertility, but really if he has 7%, according to new standards that is normal. I don't think you would have to do IUI yet. If everything is coming back normal for both of you and it has been over a year, the RE would be the way to go. They will probably start off with something less invasive given that the tests are normal.

I work in a hospital, and I cornered the infertility urologist! haha! He said anything below 5% is considered "low." He also said that 52% of the male population will have 80-90% abnormal sperm! He said he didn't know what caused abnormal shaped sperm. That's crazy I think my hubby's dr referred us too soon. I do have an appt set up for mid Sept for the RE. I'm not sure if I should keep it or not. Then I meet with the OB the next day to discuss clomid. We will hit the year mark in November. So we are cautiously optimistic that hopefully we can conceive on our own. I'm just confused on what to do next.
