Sleeping aide medications that are safe to use while pregnant?
I am 4 weeks and 2 days pregnant. Earlier this evening, I talked to my psychiatrist. Due to the risks of my developing baby, he is stopping my 30 mg Adderall and 1 mg Risperdol (which I take at night an hour before I go to bed, it acts as a sleeping aide). I will not be able to sleep and I will keep waking up randomly throughout the night and feel queasy. I have forgotten to take it before and learned my lesson quickly. Are there any sleeping aides that are non habit forming and safe for pregnant women? Melatonin I heard works well, my boyfriend's dad and step-mom give it to their 5 year old son to calm him down and put him to sleep. He knows it by "his vitamins". Lol. But not sure if its safe during pregnancy? What about Diphenhydramine? Please let me know. Also, how do I get into a sleep routine? My current routine is go to bed at 4 am and wake up at 2 pm. Really sucks. I am really tired all the time now that I'm pregnant. Things have got to change. Thanks!!

I was told melatonin wasn't pregnancy safe, so ask your OB before taking it. I had horrible insomnia with my first & was told I could take Benadryl. Once you get out of the first trimester, some drs will prescribe sleeping pills like Lunesta. However, during the first 13 wks or so, your options are limited. I can tell you from personal experience that it may be something you have to suffer with bc most sleep aides lose their effectiveness after a while. You can also google "sleep hygiene" & it will give u tips on how to improve sleep quality.
