Question

How to chart your BBT?

Can someone explain to me exactly how to do this? I wanted to try OPKs but I was watching a video with a doctor explaining PCOS and fertility and she said for some women with PCOS OPKs will not work for them at all so it'd just be a waste of money.

I need to know what chart to use? When to do check my temp? What each raise and drop means? When should my temp be higher/lower?

I know I can find this information online but I find it a lot easier asking you all on here. I trust you

Using the chart here is the easiest because it will input everything into graph form for you.
If you want to BBT, take your temperature at the same time every day after a full night's rest and before getting out of bed, talking, drinking, or eating.
Your temperature will be around the same until O (the exact temp range depends on the woman). The day after ovulation, your temperature will rise and stay high until you conceive(it will stay high if you are pregnant) or it will drop off, usually below the "average temp" you had before ovulation, when you start your period.

Part 1: I will start by saying the reason OPKs can be misleading is because they detect your LH levels which surge or spike before ovulation occurs. This is a good predictor of ovulation, but does not confirm that you will ovulate for sure. For some women (esp. those with PCOS) you're body may gear up to ovulate an surge LH but O may not occur. That's why it is good to use OPKs and BBT charts together. One predicts ovulation (OPKs) and the other (BBT) confirms it. BBT charting alone will not assist you in timing intercourse to result in pregnancy as by the time you confirm ovulation it will be too late to catch the egg.

You should chart your temperatures starting on CD1 (the first day of your period) through to the start of your next cycle. Basal Body temperature mean your RESTING body temperature so it is vital that you take your temperature immediately upon waking... (cont)

Part 2: it is also important to take you temperature at the exact same time every morning and after a minimum of 3-4 hours of unbroken sleep.

In terms of your chart, estrogen is the hormone in control of the first phase of your cycle (before ovulation). This will result in lower BBT. After ovulation occurs you can expect to see a rise of a minimum f 0.3-0.5 degrees in your chart, sustained over a period of 3 days. Only than can you confirm O has occurred. Progesterone is the hormone in control of the second phase of your cycle (luteal phase) and you can expect higher BBTs. Many women look for a "implantation dip" somewhere between 6DPO-11DPO, but this is not essential for pregnancy to occur, nor does a dip one of those days guarantee pregnancy. If you are pregnant your temps should increase 12-15DPO and if you are not you will likely see them decline 12-14 DPO. I hope this helps!
