Question

Should I take an EPT based on my ovulation date or when my period is usually due?

My average cycle length is 42 days, however the ovulation kit I used showed me that I ovulated on Day 20 this month. I am now 9 DPO but if I waited until 6 days before my normal period is due (per EPT instructions), I would need to wait two more weeks to test.

Do "they" tell you to test before the period is due because most people don't know when they ovulate, or should you still wait to test even if you have a long cycle and know when your ovulation date was?

Personally, I think it's better to start testing after your period is due. If you test too early you may get a false negative and be upset for no reason but if you test too early and find out you're pregnant, you may also face more emotional stress because there's always a possibility it doesn't stick during those really early stages.

I always tested by dpo, but I always knew for a fact when it happened. Going by an expected period is great if u dont know when u O'd and ur cycles are regular...otherwise its a wasted test (which I'm sure the HPT companies dont mind u doing!!).

If you ovulate later than normal, go by dpo. If everything is as you expected, go by date AF is due if you like that better. These dates should coincide anyway.
