Question

DOES BEING EPILEPTIC CAUSE FERTILITY ISSUES?

DH is 21 and I am 29. I am high risk pregnancy and have had multiple miscarriages in the past two years. DH is a convulsive Epileptic and an alcohol fetal syndrome child. Does this pose a problem with TTC? DH was born with epilepsy due to a few environmental factors (birth mother drank heavily while pg with him).

I tried looking this up for you and I have gotten mixed reviews to tell you the truth. Some sites say that it is the mother that solely contributes to the chances of a child having FAS, but others say that sometimes the genetics from the father that has FAS may be transferred to the child. I suppose this is one of those situations that you won't know until you give birth or have extensive testing done while you are pregnant. As far as epilepsy goes, why don't you check out epilepsyfoundation.org to get a better idea of what you may have to face as far as what your child may inherit from you both. Good luck.

We were both FAS babies and I was also a druggie baby. DH has obvious physical features of FAS and epilepsy. Although I have been told that if DH's epilepsy wasn't genetic then there wasn't any chance of our future children having it. As far as FAS goes, I'm not 100% certain if it is passed along genetically even if the mother-to-be doesn't drink while pregnant. Neither of my daughters (my youngest was adopted by my brother at birth), had any signs or symptoms of FAS eventhough I was born with FAS. I also don't have the physical features, rather I have some of the psychological features. I know from research that epilepsy can have some effect on becoming pregnant especially for the male. The sperms motility is lower for the male who has epilepsy and it drops farther if they have had seizures before the age of 10. DH was having seizures in the second grade which would have made him about 8-9 y/o.
