Question

Too much folic acid?

Is it possible to take too much folic acid? i think the recommended doseage is 1000icu/ day or something like that, but what if i happen to take more? like an extra 300 icu/ (or mg or whatever the measurement amount on the capsule is). Folate is water soluable right? I think it may not have any ill effects????

"While this is true, excess folic acid (in the milligram levels) has been seen to mask symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. Also, excessive amounts have been found to prevent action of some medications such as anti-epilepsy. These are some of the reasons why the upper limit of 1000 micrograms (1 milligram) has been set. However, if you accidentally take too many supplements in a day, you will not likely absorb higher than 1000 milligrams"

Of course you only need about 400mg - 800mg, unless you have a history of neural tube defects, you could probably use a pill chopper and just chop them in half and safe money!

U can safely take up to 5000mcg (5mg). I took that (OB approved) while ttc and up until second tri then I knocked it down to 2000mcg.

I was taking extra folic acid on top of my prenatal which had 800mg. My dr. instructed me to not take the additional folic acid and just stick with the 800mg that's in my prenatal.
