Question

Graves Disease/Thyroid Disorders and TTC

I have Graves Disease. Thought I was done with kids - I have 3, aged 8 through 16. I'm 37 and have been battling Graves for 4 years. Got divorced a few years ago, met my soulmate, got married last August, and - despite inheriting stepsons - have decided we want 1 child together. We've been together for 2.5 years and never used anything to prevent pregnancy, but nothing ever happened. My periods are irregular - either I get them every two weeks or (like now) I go 6+ weeks without one. Anyone else on here TTC with an autoimmune/thyroid disorder? Are there supplements you are taking to help?

Hey! I saw you didn't have an answer yet, and didn't want to pass over your question without giving mine.
I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Without meds, I am severely hypo and almost died because I was untreated.
While I was untreated, I would go months without a period. Even while I was being treated, my periods were very sporadic, but at least they were coming!
I would HIGHLY recommend Vitex. I take Vitex- 2 caps a day- and have a normal cycle every month that I take it regularly. When I don't take it, my cycle goes wonky, and that confirms to me that I need to be on it constantly.
Vitex works by leveling out excess hormones that autoimmune diseases and PCOS can cause. In most cases, you have to take it for about 8 weeks before you see any improvement, but I thought that was worth it. I now ovulate on CD 20-21 and have a 31 day cycle.
I get my Vitex on drugstore.com 100 capsules for $5. It's natural and cheap!

Also, good luck in TTC! The fact that you were able to conceive with an autoimmune disease gives me hope. I've been battling mine for almost 10 years now, and hubby and I have been TTC/ NTNP for 4 years without any luck.

Thanks! I have not been able to conceive though. I was diagnosed when my youngest was 3 or 4. Almost 3 years of no protection, and not even a hint of pregnancy. I'm glad you said Vitex - it's the supplement I had read the most about and was most interested in. There really isn't much info online about ttc with thyroid disorders. BUT FYI, my cousin also has Graves, and conceived TWICE after her diagnosis. Her youngest is 1.

I have Graves and my endocrinologist wants me to have surgery to remove mine, but I feel like my levels are good, why bother it. I'm think acupuncture just to see if it will help with my thyroid and TTCing. It wouldn't hurt. Glad to see another sister on here that I can relate to.
