Most practitioners will do between 3-5 on a normal healthy pregnancy. The 18-20 week is the big one you won't want to skip out on, but honestly, they are all important.
Totally none of my business, but with all the expense of doctor's appointments, tests, unexpected emergencies and labor and delivery itself, I would not recommend getting pregnant without having insurance first. If you get pregnant first and then try to get insurance, you could be denied based on that they would consider a pregnancy a pre-existing condition. An average ER visit alone if you need emergency care, will cost about 10,000 dollars, and my labor and delivery (had to have an emergency c-section in 2010) cost a total of 78,000 dollars. Crazy, but paying for an ultrasound will seem like a walk in the park compared to what will await in the end without insurance. Financially getting your ducks in a row is just as, if not more, important than getting prepared physically or emotionally. Good luck
