Question

Overweight and fertility

My husband and I have been ttc for over 2 yrs. we have had 5 iui cycles, 1 lead to pregnancy with a miscarriage 7 weeks later. we are considering ivf, but wanted to know if there were any women out there who are over weight, had more than 5 iui's and were successful. our dr is essentially leaving the disicion to continue with iui or move on to ifv to us. we are producing a number of mature folicals and my husband's #'s have been off the charts. we are just not making that connection.
I am a healthy over weight woman, though overweight. i have heard that obesity can have a factor on fertility. what is your experience?

HUGE factor on fertility. This was a subject I did a lot of reading/research on - I lost 120lbs (a number of years ago) & during that time attended a lot of classes on how weight impacts your body, both form & function. Most women were able to boost their fertility by losing weight, some had been trying for years and lost only a fraction of the weight they needed to (25% or so) before ending up pregnant. It's a matter of the egg developing past a two-cell stage - I can't recall it off the top of my head, but essentially, the amount of internal fat we store directly impacts the development of the egg. The more contact the egg has with these internal stores, the more it boosts the egg's metabolism and the more it consumes the resources it needs to conserve. It basically burns out, too soon.

IVF is expensive, so you may want to try focusing on diet and exercise for a few months prior to taking that route - to give yourself the best possible, most affordable opportunity. Good lu

Thank you. i appreciate the information. I have read mixed articles on the subject. My DR has encouraged me to lose weight and i have, but my thyroid issue has made it difficult to be consistant. the positive side is I am no longer gaining.
It's frustrating becuase I have seen so many extremely overweight women pregnant and here I am, healthy, eat well, exercise pretty regularly, a regualr cycle, great egg production and nothing... ghrrr... lol. thanks again for the well wishes and good advice

I know, it's so frustrating! So many mixed opinions from health professionals.. And everyone is so different. I know some a few women that catch pregnant really, really easily - overweight, skinny, average, you name it. I know others who do nothing but struggle, no matter their health or weight. Overall, there's always sound advice (eat healthy, exercise, keep up on your folic acid, etc.) but no miracle cure. I wish! Thyroid issues make it even harder. :(

I would never be able to afford IVF, so I'm exhausting all other options before we give up for good. Hang in there! Happy thoughts.
