Question

Ovulation. Clomid? Birth Control Pill?

So I went to the doctor last week. After looking at my charts for the last 6 cycles (9 months) he said "you would be a really good candidate for Clomid and it is possible that you have PCOS." No exam. No tests. Nothing.

I know that he can clearly see something is wrong {late ovulation/no ovulation}, but how can he know exactly what is wrong based solely on my charts?

I am 23-years-old and have only been ttc for 9 months, so he said that there is no rush for me to start on Clomid, but he was very willing to start it right away. {I would just have to set up another appointment to discuss blah blah blah..$}

I have heard of people taking the BCP every other month to help regulate/jumpstart ovulation. I realize this means every other month I don't get to ttc, but that's not much of a difference from now. I also realize this won't fix the problem {if it is PCOS} but neither will Clomid. This seems like a cheaper/less-risky option.

Has anyone else done this or heard

My first doctor put me on birth control for three months to try to regulate my irregular cycles. I had cycles that were between 40-65 days long, and knew I wasn't ovulating. And the birth control did nothing. Sometimes the birth control works, but the Clomid will most likely work, even for women with PCOS.

However, if you choose Clomid, I would make sure that your doctor will monitor you as you use it to check for cysts and make sure your lining isn't too thin. That's very important.

As for the tests, a lot of times irregular cycles means unreliable ovulation, which explains the Clomid suggestion. I'm not sure why he wouldn't look into the PCOS thing more. There are a couple of blood tests to check for hormone levels that will give some answers. Maybe ask to run those.

My cycles were irregular and my FS said straight away I had PCOS. He popped me up on the table and did a scan and confirmed PCOS. It took 5 minutes and was very clear on the screen that I had it. The clomid help you have regular cycles so you are regularly releasing the eggs. After two cycles on the clomid my PCOS has improved and I am producing and releasing regular eggs.
