Question

6 weeks pregnant...is vaginal ultrasound safe?

I did some research online and came across all sorts of stories some of which said the vaginal ultrasound is not really safe as it can (horror of horrors) lead to miscarriage.

Is this true? I find this hard to believe but just in case I thought I should ask.

I am scheduled for vaginal ultrasound this Friday (6 weeks and 6 days)

Thanks, :)

It's the safest form of imaging there is. Don't stress about it!

I had a similar question - I was scanned at 4 weeks (she thought I was five - as she was counting CD1 bleeding and basically ignored my point that I ovulated late)

I came home and was really concerned, as she scanned for ages..I did some reading too..but then so may women have scans at 6 weeks - and if it were unsafe - I suppose the numbers would show..maybe you can ask them if they will wait til 8 weeks and do an external (over the tummy) scan?

The hospital have asked me to go in again on Wed..at 5 weeks - but I am quite certain that i will either not go..or ask them to do just bloods...Unless I am spotting, pain etc...and suspect ectopic

Why do they want to do a 6 week scan anyway -hv u had pain/spotting?

Also, do u have any good research links u can send?

I am in Brazil at the moment and I am traveling back to Europe on the 1st of May. I just want to make sure everything is ok before my 11 hours flight to Paris and then 2 more hours to London.

I don't have bleeding or pain, in fact I don't have any pregnancy symptoms and if it wasn't for the regular blood tests (every 5days) and missed period, I wouldn't know I was pregnant ....

Didn't save the links unfortunately. I was just browsing the net but if I find them, I'll send it to you.
Thanks for your response :)

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. They don't go anywhere near your cervix and that'd be like saying having sex could cause a miscarriage. Absolutely not. Women who undergo fertility treatments have many scans in early pregnancy; it's fine.

Also they want to do a six week scan to make sure the sac is in the right place (not eptopic) and has a fetal pole and heartbeat. If it doesn't, you will miscarry and they will need to inform you that pregnancy isn't viable and make sure that you do miscarry without complications.

Thanks for the reassurance Kellie. I really need to see what's going on before the 24 hours airport travel fiasco :)
