How heavy is spotting?

People talk about spotting being light, pinkish, or brownish. Is it every heavy for a day? Is it ever dark?

I started bleeding today (thinking it's my late AF) but it's different than my normal AF because I'm normally heavy and this bleeding is definitely dark like a AF but it's not flowing like one.....? (hope this makes sense)
