When to take a hpt if you have a long cycle?

I have a cycle that lasts roughly 35 days (can be longer some months). This is our first month ttc, and I'm wondering when is the best day to take a hpt test? Everything I read seems to be based on an average 28 day cycle.

Do you know when you ovulate? If you do, or you plan on tracking it...take a test 14DPO.
If you aren't going to temp or use OPKs then start testing at 36 days? Or 1 day after your longest cycle length.
