Question

***Skin Care While TTC/ Pregnant

Before stopping the pill a year ago I had great skin. However, since stopping the pill over the past year I developed mild to steady acne. It drives me nuts! I've tried everything, and nothing has really worked for me. Proactiv somewhat works, but not enough to fix the problem.

So, when I was at my doc's on Friday I was asking him what I could do and he said absolutely do not use proactiv while ttc/ pregnant because it can actually cause birth defects in babies! I could not beleive that! I had heard it was harsh, but didn't imagine it was that dangerous. He gave me a prescription that is safe to use while ttc/ pregnant and he also mentioned a lot of products out there are not safe for ttc/ pregnancy.

I just wanted to pass this along to anyone else who is struggling with problem skin :)

Did your doc say what ingredient it was that was bad?

I didn't see it in the ingredient list on Proactiv's website, but a key ingredient to avoid is Retinol, or Retinoic Acid. Also called Vitamin A. That stuff causes serious neural tube (spinal cord) defects, like spinabifida and telencephaly. Very bad. They used to prescribe it in pill form to pregnant women for acne, then realized how horrible it was for the babies.

Check your makeup too - a lot of foundations have retinol in them.
